The museum building occupies the site of a church which was built in 1640, under the name of the Old Dutch Church. In 1732, the church was renovated and the name was changed into the New Dutch Church (Dutch: De Nieuwe Hollandsche Kerk). In 1808, an earthquake destroyed the church. Later in 1912, a building was constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style on the site, which initially functioned as a warehouse belonging to Geo Wehry u0026 Co. In 1938, the building was renovated, following Dutch colonial architecture. The garden of the Wayang Museum, located on the former yard of the Dutch church, was the funeral site of General Governor Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Later, the building was bought by the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences, an institution dealing with Indonesian culture and science. The institution then transferred this building to the Old Batavia Foundation and on December 22, 1939, it was made a museum under the name of Old Batavia Museum. In 1957, after the independence of Indonesia, the building was transferred to the Institute of Indonesian Culture and on September 17, 1962, to the Ministry of Education and Culture. On June 23, 1968, the DKI Jakarta Administration made the building into the Wayang Museum; the inauguration took place on August 13, 1975.

Interesting place if you are into Indonesian puppet tradition. Wheelchair accessible.
Recommended to hire a guide. I had a good one who showed me most of the places in Jakarta for well under 40$

I think the only one puppet show museum in Indonesia. Located in Kota Tua Jakarta, North Jakarta. Easy to find and access. Cheap price.

Many kind of puppet displayed. With good arrangement and lighting, I looks interesting. Also display puppet from around the world. Quite big museum, 2 floor and everything can be accessed by wheelchair with more effort. Also there is a show every specific time.

Pros: Surprisingly broad variety of wayang (puppet) not just from across Indonesia but also from around the world. Good learning experience for new understanding of Wayang not just to entertain but also as a means to convey values of morality, religion, even as political tool. Great historical building once serve as a church during dutch occupation. IDR 5000 very well spent. Much better than anticipated.
Cons/suggestion: more info/explanation of each display in english, lighting set a bit dim for visitors to take good pictures

Museum Wayang is one of the three Art Museums in Kota Tua. It's been revitalized and far more comfort to be visited than before. It mainly exhibits wayang golek from West Java and wayang kulit from many parts of area (Cirebon, Purwakarta, Surakarta Bali, even Palembang). Some others are from other countries. Fee entrance is only 5K rupiah for adults and 2K rupiah for children. Wayang show usually plays every Sunday except Des-Feb (off). No additional fee for watching the show. ❤????
