This monument called : "Merdeka Monument" in Lapangan Banteng which is located in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta.
This monument is squeezed by several other historical buildings, such as the Cathedral Church and the Istiqlal Mosque, there are many stories from the field which has an area of u200bu200b5.2 hectares.
Long before the West Irian Liberation statue which was now the main icon, had previously been a lion statue in the field. This field also has a story why it was finally named as Banteng Field. According to records from various sources, Banteng Field has changed its name several times.
In the Dutch colonial era, this field was named "Waterlooplein". However, at that time, this field was better known as Singa Field. The name was chosen because in the middle of the pillars memorial centered the victory of the battle of Waterloo, with a statue of a lion on it.
The Battle of Waterloo was the last war of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, on June 18, 1815 near the city of Waterloo, about 15 kilometers south of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Napoleon lost to the British, Dutch and German allied forces. Historically, the field has often changed functions in line with ownership changes.
The mention of the Banteng Square was sparked when Indonesia's independence. However, before the monument was torn down when Japan colonized the country.
But, there is also a version that says that since the Dutch era, this area has been called "Buffelsfeld" (bull field).
The origin of the burly statues which since August 17, 1963 stands tall in the middle of the Banteng Square until now, is inseparable from the history of Trikora.
Trikora, or Tri Komando Rakyat, is the name of an operation echoed by President Sukarno in Yogyakarta, to free West Irian from Dutch hands. The idea of u200bu200bmaking a statue made of bronze and weighing up to eight tons was visualized by Henk Nantung, in the form of a sketch.
