The pilgrims believe that Sunan Bungkul is a guardian, but the story of the Sunan Bungkul is too minimal to be traced. However, his tomb that is located in the complex of Taman Bungkul saves uneasily revealed historical mystery. There is a saga that mentions that Mbah Bungkul, or Sunan Bungkul, was also Empu Supa, a community and religious leaders in Majapahit kingdom in the 15th century. He is the elder of Bungkul village, which was ever visited by Raden Rahmat or Sunan Ampel, around 600 years ago, when he was traveling from Trowulan Majapahit towards Kalimas in Ampel Denta.
Ki Supa later converted to Islam and changed his nickname to Ki Ageng Mahmudin. Because he lived in Bungkul village, Ki Supa was better known as Sunan Bungkul. Their relationship grew stronger as Sunan Bungkul was later becoming Raden Rahmat’s father in law. This relationship became one of the reasons why Islam was spread faster in Southern Surabaya than in other regions. Mbah Bungkul is now believed to be one of the guardians in Surabaya. Pilgrims who visit the Ampel tomb will definitely visit this tomb complex which is located in Progo Street. Mbah Bungkul’s existence can be placed equal to Sheikh Abdul Muhyi (Tasikmalaya), Sunan Geseng (Magelang), Sunan Tembayat (Klaten), Ki Ageng Gribig (Klaten), Sunan Stage (Tegal), Sunan Prapen (Gresik), and other local guardians around of different cities.
