We stayed at NHC for 5 days and it was our safe haven when visiting all places we planned to do so.
Location:
Firstly, one has to mention the lovely entrance to the cottage at the end of a small path in the rice fields. It’s only a 5-minute walk to the center of Ubud but crucially provides the necessary quietness that one seeks. The street on the other side of the entrance/rice field is one with several bars, restaurants and spa. All that you look for is close!
Accommodation:
The buildings themselves look and feel like an authentic Balinese homestay. The pool is relatively small but has a very nice vibe (as if your swimming in a temple!). It doesn’t have sufficient beds, however so you can be forced to sit on one bed together or not on a bed at all! I was informed that the complex was built specifically as a hotel (with a Balinese/Indonesian owner) and that it was 20+ years old.
Room:
The age was, however, unfortunately noticeable in the rooms and sometimes around the complex. As in other reviews about this stay, everything felt a bit outdated (older phones, window and door frames that are made of old wood, a non-functional hairdryer, old/insufficient beds at the pool, etc.) This has forced me to remove one star from the total.
The bed itself is quite comfortable (am writing on it at the moment) and has a nicely functioning insect net. The room is spacious and has a nice balcony with traditional style doors and 2 seats. It also has a nice view into the tropical forest from the side! There is a closet for your clothing, although it is not very luxurious. The bathroom features a bath/shower combination without curtain so it can get quite wet. It is however quite large so you can still stand at a dry part.
Staff and services:
The staff at NHD is very friendly and will have a chat with you in case you feel like it. They will also help you out with any request you need at a fair rate (be it scooter rental or logistics to your next location). Breakfast is served at a rate of 50k/per person if you don’t book it in advance (which is a good price for breakfast). The choice for breakfast is simple; either Indonesian cuisine (Nasi or Mi Goreng) or ‘American’, which is just egg with toast and 2 slices of backed potato. All breakfast will also include either fresh fruit (or juice) and coffee or tea. The breakfast room is an open area with a nice view on the complex and abundant flora and fauna around (you can see squirrels jumping on the palmtrees around you if you’re lucky). It’s a nice and quite atmosphere.
Summary:
Location: 10/10
Accommodation: 8/10
Room: 7/10
Staff: 10/10
Breakfast: 8/10
Price: fair
We would recommend to stay at Nick’s Hidden Cottage. It’s inexpensive and offers the nice and quite surrounding that you are looking for after a long day in the busy streets Ubud and surroundings.
