Formerly a palace for royals of Keraton. This place was divided by several buildings that surrounded by locals houses.

There's no sign or maps in the area that will show you where to go, but you can always get a tour guide with affordable price.

Really popular among tourist in jogja, you can enjoy this place better in the morning.

Taman Sari Water Castle, also known as Taman Sari (Javanese: ꦠꦩꦤ꧀ ꦱꦫꦶ), is the site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. It is located about 2 km south within the grounds of the Kraton, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Built in the mid-18th century, the Taman Sari had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area, a defense area, and a hiding place.

Taman Sari consisted of four distinct areas: a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west, a bathing complex in the centre, a complex of pavilions and pools in the south, and a smaller lake in the east. Today only the central bathing complex is well preserved, while the other areas have been largely occupied by the Kampung Taman settlement.

Since 1995, the Yogyakarta Palace Complex including Taman Sari has been listed as a tentative World Heritage Site.

The name Taman Sari means as much as "park or garden with beautiful flowers". The construction of the complex was started by Hamengkubuwono I and his successor Hamengkubuwono II completed it. The complex consisted of 59 buildings, swimming pools, and 18 water gardens, and was primarily intended as a place to rest and relax. The water palace is the only well-preserved part of the complex. Here the sultan came with his wives and concubines to bathe and mate. The complex has not been in use for very long; maintenance was very expensive and in 1812 part of the complex was destroyed. The earthquake of 1867 was the final blow to the complex, it was no longer used and gradually the complex was occupied by squatters, creating the Kampung Taman. The water palace has been restored, but is unfortunately poorly maintained. Still a nice destination.
