PUNCH has transformed my (initially) weight-loss journey into a life-long healthy lifestyle.
I remember the first time I joined in August 2018. The main reason was because I needed to lose 8 kgs. My whole life has been filled with various sports like basketball, running, badminton, soccer, swimming, etc. Never have I ever tried martial art before. A friend who suggested PUNCH told me that PUNCH is all about discipline, she said “The coaches there will train you like a soldier, military style.”
Long story short, my first 6 months there was torturous. The funny thing was, I kept coming back. All the skipping, jumping jack and sand sack drill has successfully rebuilt my stamina. However, I did not lose weight at all. To add to my misery, most of my friends who had similar training schedule with me, lost 5-20 kgs. Can you imagine the envy I have to endure?
After consulting with the coaches there, I found a revelation. I had it all wrong. The end goal is a better life quality through healthy lifestyle. Losing weight, looking fit and increased mobility were just the bonus that we got along the process. Therefore, I changed my mindset.
I revolutionized 3 aspects in my life: training schedule, eating habit and sleeping pattern.
First, I made a commitment to myself to at least visit PUNCH 3 days in a typical week. I usually attend 2 evening classes each day, which means I will have at least 6 classes in a week. During my training, I put all of my energy to focus on the coaches’ instructions. Quoting Coach DONI, “Train like you mean it! Training seriously for 1 hour is burning more than enough fat than joining 2-3 classes but cutting slacks in between. Always improve your own limit in every session, never stop pushing your own limit.”
Second, I also changed my eating habit. I cut down carbs and sugar. I was too scared to try Keto Diet, therefore I created my own diet. I eat 2 boxes of salad, 300 grams of protein (non-red meat) and 2 boiled eggs on daily basis. I drink only water and I rehydrate myself frequently in small amounts throughout the day. I stop eating at approximately 7 pm. Like any other habit, the first 2 weeks was hell. The transition will eventually teach our body to stop craving all the unhealthy food. When it does, the calorie intake problem will take care of itself.
Third, I promise to give my body what it desperately needs: consistent sleeping schedule and enough sleep time. I try to sleep at 11 pm (the latest) and to have 7-8 hours long sleep. Resting (especially good quality sleep) is as important as exercising. Overtraining will deprive our body from the natural recovery process, which will then hinder the whole fat burning process.
In only 2 months later, VOILA, suddenly my friends kept telling me that I look skinnier than ever. Now this is what I would like to emphasize: quality over quantity! Doing things right is way more effective than working hard alone. So, the 3 RIGHTS that we have to do are: train right, eat right and rest right.
Now, the million-dollar question is: HOW can I have the discipline survive all the positive yet challenging changes? The answer is: join PUNCH. The community that we have here is irreplaceable. The coaches, the staffs and the members provide us with great support system to sustain positive attitude and healthy lifestyle. There’s nothing we cannot achieve as long as we have the right friends beside us. They will cheer for us, they will push us harder (or maybe hit us harder too); but most importantly they will be there to celebrate healthier-life with us.
Ergo, all of the time, money and effort I invested in PUNCH are completely worth it.
