Went here twice, at night and at the afternoon. Both using a scooter, riding slowly through the village road. Inevitably i got heron poop on myself, but the experience was very exhilarating nonetheless. There were hundreds of them herons just hanging out on the roadside trees.

What a beautiful place and great work they are doing! Learned a lot about the birds and their unique behavior. I hope more people get to know this place sincs it's really close to Ubud city centre!

There are three places to watch the herons from, two of which serve drinks and are very relaxing, the watchpoint 3 would be best for any visiting that have accessibility requirements as there is a wider staircase at the watchpoint. The heron land in all the trees in the village at times around sunset - there is hundreds of them. Literally 100s.

Even if you are not a birder it is impressive to visit Petulu at sunset and watch the 400,000 herons come in to roost in the trees around this village. There are three species of herons that roost here and locals can help point them out to you.

Passing through the village around 5pm, but no birds flying home. Only saw 2 birds in one of the tree. No where to stop or park the car. Maybe should be there on exact time in late afternoon.

Great if you're interested in birds or do birdwatching. Bring a camera and a pair of binoculars. It's just a plain viewing deck with plastic chairs. They serve local beer, but that's pretty much it. If you get there early (before sunset), you can talk to the guy that tends to the place, and he will tell you all about the birds. Also do some research and reading about the place before going because they have legends and stories about the herons that nest there. My partner and I enjoy birdwatching. We got to the place before everyone else, so we were able to chat up the guy that takes care of the place, who genuinely loves birds. We didn't have to pay for anything. We just took a motorbike to the place. Aside from the herons there also are a lot of kingfishers and munias in the ricefields.

You will see a lot of herons srriving home for the night. Nothing special unless you are a Bird enthusiast ????
